Chapter 1 – Crefelds Arrived in America
On June 14, 1909, the ship Lapland landed in New York,
after sailing from Antwerp, Belgium. On
board were Franz Crefeld, his wife Gertrude Crefeld, and 3 sons: Peter, Franz,
and Jacob. The ship manifest lists
the family on page 113-114, lines 18 – 22. The ship manifest tells us several
things regarding the family:
 | The
family’s last address in Germany was in Rodenkirche, Germany. |
 | Father
Frank’s trade is a smith, and he can read and write. |
 | Father
Peter Crefeld living in Duren is listed as reference for relative in native
country. |
 | Granwood,
NJ is listed as the destination – where is this? Is this Cranford, where the Witting’s lived? |
 | The
family did not have a paid ticket to their final destination. |
 | Father
is listed as person that paid the fare – was it Father Crefeld or Father
Witting? |
 | The
family was traveling to join Father Christian Witting, Gertrude’s dad. |
 | The
family had never been in the U.S.A. before. |
