Chapter 3 – Crefelds in the 1920’s
The 1920 Census gives us a glimpse of the Crefeld family
living in North Arlington, where Gertrude would live until her death in 1961.
The Census told us several things:
 | Frank
and Gertrude had 4 boys: Peter J., Frank J., Christian N (Nicholas), and
Friedrich J. (John). |
 | Frank,
Gertrude, Peter and Frank J.’s mother tongue was German, but all could
speak English. All four are
listed as born in Germany (Rhein Province) and immigrated in 1909. |
 | Frank
was a Boiler Maker, and worked in a Repair Factory receiving a wage. |
 | Peter
worked as a laborer at a farm receiving a wage (at 15 yrs old). |
 | The
family was naturalized in 1919. |
 | Both
parents of Frank and Gertrude were of German heritage. |
 | They
owned their home, but had a mortgage against it. |
