Chapter 3 – Crefelds in the 1920’s

The 1920 Census gives us a glimpse of the Crefeld family living in North Arlington, where Gertrude would live until her death in 1961.  The Census told us several things:

Frank and Gertrude had 4 boys: Peter J., Frank J., Christian N (Nicholas), and Friedrich J. (John).
Frank, Gertrude, Peter and Frank J.’s mother tongue was German, but all could speak English.  All four are listed as born in Germany (Rhein Province) and immigrated in 1909.
Frank was a Boiler Maker, and worked in a Repair Factory receiving a wage.
Peter worked as a laborer at a farm receiving a wage (at 15 yrs old).
The family was naturalized in 1919.
Both parents of Frank and Gertrude were of German heritage.
They owned their home, but had a mortgage against it.
